Institute of Machine Intelligence

Laboratory Profile

NKIMI (Institute of Machine Intelligence, Nankai University: https://imi.nankai.edu.cn) was founded in September 1990. The Institute is committed to the research and application of new technologies in the field of computer artificial intelligence. Its main research areas include pattern recognition, natural language processing, medical big data analysis, intelligent software engineering and testing, information security, recommendation systems, computer vision and image processing, human-computer interaction, etc.

In 1989, Professor Wang Qingren, founder of the institute, completed the world-leading character recognition algorithm. In 1990, he developed TypeReader, which was China's first Windows commercial

OCR software sold in the international market,. The software was awarded as the world's best OCR software for three consecutive years from 1992 to 1994, beating Xerox, Caere and Catera in the most rigorous INTERNATIONAL OCR technology evaluation. At the same time, the institute also completed a number of overseas software engineering projects, including Australian HIC form recognition and processing system, Corex Western business card recognition system, stock analysis and evaluation system, etc.

Since 2000, NKIMI has entered a new period of development. It has made major progress in software testing and concerted development, document image processing and formula recognition,

biometrics, machine translation, etc.. NKIMI has hosted more than 30 national and provincial funded projects, applied for or obtained more than 30 national patents and software copyrights. The institute has published hundreds of articles in important journals and conferences in China and worldwide. And NKIMI has developed and completed the world's first printing mathematical formula image recognition and understanding software products, the automatic palm print identification system in criminal investigation, the leading online software system development platform and software test management platform, etc.

Today, against the historical background of national artificial intelligence strategy, NKIMI has ushered in new development opportunities. Supported by various favorable policies and resources provided by the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and the Institute of Computer Science, NKIMI has set up a number of active and vibrant research groups to overcome obstacles in many international cutting-edge academic issues such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis and intelligent software engineering. At present, the institute has 2 professors (doctoral supervisors), 2 lecturers, 3 laboratory engineers, and nearly 50 graduate students. In recent years, with the joint efforts of teachers and students, the academic research level of NKIMI has been greatly improved, the institute’s scientific research achievements were published in numerous top international conferences and journals. Meanwhile, the institute has received a number of national and provincial funding in the fields of smart grid, smart medical care, smart mobile applications, etc., and won multiple provincial- and ministerial-level awards including Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Awards, as well as a number of national and industrial science and technology competitions. Also, guided by the institute, students have obtained many national or industrial science and technology competition awards. At the same time, NKIMI’s exchanges and cooperation with other institutions in China and abroad are increasing. NKIMI has forged close relations with the National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University and other famous universities in China and worldwide, and maintained long-term cooperation with Baidu, Huawei, State Grid and other large enterprises and institutions. Teachers and students of NIKIMI also actively participate in international and domestic academic exchange activities.

Since its establishment, the institute has had nearly 300 graduates, and most of them have become the backbone of the industry. In recent years, the graduates mainly choose to work at large Internet enterprises such as Tencent and Alibaba, as well as the headquarters of state-owned banks, government units, major universities and other government institutions. NKIMI continues to welcome students seeking master and doctoral degrees in computer science and control theory!

The development of NKIMI from scratch to its maturity is also a journey of sweat and persistent pursuit of its teachers and students. Today, NKIMI has established an international industry-university-research environment with a talented team and clear direction. As the saying goes, Someday, with my sail piercing the clouds; I will mount the wind, break the waves, and traverse the vast, rolling sea.” NKIMI will uphold the spirit of Nankai University and continue to transform, innovate and forge ahead by seizing new historical opportunities.
