Huawei Connect 2022 Intelligent Base Ascend Tour to Colleges and Universities - Special Event at Nankai University Held Successfully

On November 9, 2022, Huawei Connect 2022 Intelligent Base Ascend Tour to Collegesand Universities - Special Event at Nankai University, sponsored by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and co-organized by the College of Artificial Intelligence, Nankai University and Tianjin Ascend Ecological Innovation Center, was held successfully. Xu Jing, Vice Dean of the College of Artificial Intelligence, Zheng Yueyang, Secretary of Youth League Committee of the College of Artificial Intelligence, Yi Kang, outstanding doctoral representative of Nankai University, Ye Yibo, CTO of Tianjin Ascend Ecological Innovation Center, and Qi Weiyu, AI Solutions Engineer of Ascend attended the event. From university to enterprise, from faculty to students, and from theoretical sharing and practical operation, the event is intended to gather and assist more developers to surpass themselves, develop the talents, accelerate the scientific research, and build a new Ascend AI ecology.

University-enterprise cooperation is an important approach for the universities to train high-tech talents and highlight the characteristics of university running, and also an important measure for enterprises to speed up structural adjustment, promote the transformation of development mode, enhance independent innovation ability and improve core competitiveness. Professor Xu Jing mentioned in her speech that since its establishment in 2018, the College of Artificial Intelligence has attached great importance to the cooperation between production and education. As the Huawei Kunpeng innovative talents training base, the College of Artificial Intelligence has established good cooperative relations with Huawei in many aspects, including faculty training, innovative training camp, intelligent base course, Internet + Competition, etc. In terms of intelligent base, Nankai University offers 21 courses with the support from Huawei. It is hoped that students can understand the differences between university training and enterprise demand in more such events in the future, and constantly improve their personal value and cultivate their comprehensive quality in practice.

Artificial intelligence is in the stage of accelerated development and large-scale application, with great demand for talents. Ye Yibo, CTO of Tianjin Ascend Ecological Innovation Center, delivered a keynote speech titled Intelligent Future, Brilliant Ascend, analyzing the development trend and challenges of artificial intelligence, and summarizing the construction of Ascend ecology and the development of Ascend computing industry. In addition, Ye also made an in-depth interpretation of Huawei life cycle developer growth plan. Ascend community gathers Ascend resources and supports developers through the whole process from the aspects of learning, training, practice and competition, hoping to work together to create a new era of Ascend computing industry.

College of Artificial Intelligence, Nankai University is leading in both intelligent talents training and scientific research by virtue of the profound discipline foundation and historical accumulation. In the sharing session between faculty and students, Yi Kang, a representative of Nankai University, shared the cooperation process between the College of Artificial Intelligence and Huawei and related achievements in his speech. At the beginning of its establishment, the College of Artificial Intelligence joined Huawei's Fertile Soil Program. Two faculty members of Nankai University have been employed as Huawei Cloud Computing Pioneer Teachers, joined the Engineering Industry-University-Research Alliance, and received regular Huawei teacher training. In the competitions held by Huawei, Nankai University has also won many awards. For example, Zhiyan, a saliency detection system based on multispectral imager, won the Tianjin Gold Award and the National Third Prize in the 7th China International Internet + College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. It is hoped that more students will join Huawei projects in the future and use Mindspore framework for algorithm development.

At the end of the event, Qi Weiyu, the AI solutions engineer of Ascend, led the students to conduct a fun AI practice of Ascend. First of all, in the theoretical part, Qi Weiyu introduced CANN and DeepLabV3 + models. Then, in the online experiment “Reasoning application development based on Ascend CANN: Semantic Segmentation (Python)”, the whole process of network model loading, reasoning and result output deployment was displayed to help students quickly familiarize themselves with and master the basic development process of semantic segmentation.

With the accelerated evolution of a new round of global industrial transformation, the cutting-edge information technology represented by artificial intelligence has driven the society into an intelligent era. Intelligent Base - Ascend Tour to Colleges and Universities is a successful attempt by Huawei and universities to practice the integration of production and education and university-enterprise integration.
