Research Achievement by Nankai University Awarded at IEEE  M2VIP International Conference

Origami  is one of the cultural treasures of China, with unique artistic value and  rich spatial configuration. Its history can be traced back to more than 500  years BC. Origami also provides valuable information for researchers to  develop intelligent robot systems. Recently, the faculty and students of Nankai   University put forward a soft robot based on origami structure, and explored   the structural design and system modeling of the soft robot. The paper titled  Design and Analysis of a Yoshimura Continuum Actuator, which   introduces this research, recently won the John Billingsley Best Conference   Paper Award in the 28th IEEE M2VIP. The research was jointly completed by  master student Zhang Jingyu and doctoral student Chen Jie, with Professor Han   Jianda from the College of Artificial Intelligence and Dr. Dang Yu, a young   faculty member, as instructors.

Origami robot is structured similar to the   accordion and attached with the classic patterns in traditional origami. By   controlling the rotation of the motor, the origami module of the origami   robot can elongate, contract and bend. Different from traditional rigid   robots, origami robot is more pliable, flexible and scalable, and can provide   innovative solutions for the man-machine integration, medical treatment,   industry, special applications, etc. Meanwhile, the origami robots are   expected to combine advanced materials, flexible sensors and other   cutting-edge technologies to promote the practical application of soft   robots.

The 28th IEEE Conference on Mechanics and   Machine Vision in Practice (M2VIP 2022) is abbreviated as IEEE   M2VIP. It is reported that it is the first time that this award has been set   up, which was named by Professor John Billingsley, the founder of the   conference, for recognizing the best conference papers in mechatronics and   machine vision. According to the paper level and the report quality,   the organizing committee comprehensively selected the best   conference papers from nearly 100 candidates, and awarded the authors   conference certificates and bonuses.
